Clang Clang Clang goes the bells...

Today started abruptly with a fire drill at 7 am.  After my roommate and I finally realized what was going on and stumbled out of bed, and I put pants on, We were able to find our way out of doors.  Which is very difficult when you are tired, cold, and pissed off at whoever decided this was a good time for a fire drill.  My sympathies to the girl in the towel but seriously, who is up at 7 when we all don't have to be in class until 8:30... there you go retribution for being an early riser.  We became even angrier when we were informed we took too long.  8 minutes is not acceptable but 5 is.  Now i understand how serious fires are but now we will have to do another 7 am fire drill so we can get it right.  I dislike that very much.
Enough complaining.  Now for exciting news.  I am going to be directing Act 2 scene 1 of Much Ado About Nothing here at Harlaxton.  Hooray my directing debut and Shakespeare especially.  I'm very excited.  For those who don't know much ado it is the party/costume ball scene.  And because I am unoriginal and steal from my high school drama director I will be doing it with a 40's setting so I can have three girls be "andrews sistersesque" singers for the entertainment/swing dancing.  As I told the group my goal is to make the world realize that Shakespeare is fun, and this is my first small step.  So I'm pretty much got my cast and now just need to plan out and do it.  I'm so thrilled.

I'm thrilled for you too. On your next directing assignment, don't play it safe with taking something you know will work - take some risks. Sometimes by doing something "wrong" you learn more in the end!!! Tap the creativity. Sometimes it's "good" sometimes it's "bad" but even the "bad" is good, because you learn what NOT to do. Then when you happen on something "good" you know *why* it's good!

[About your firedrill, I know, pain in the a$$ and I can still remember wanting to kill some absolute a$$hole who pulled the alarm (faux fire alarm that po'd the fire department BIGTIME) at 2a.m. one Saturday morning and we had to walk down TEN FLIGHTS -- but remember, you're in an older building(s) not necessarily designed with fire escape in mind - wherever you are, get in the habit of thinking "if I had to get out RIGHT NOW, what's the quickest way out, if that way is blocked, what is my other option?) if you ever really do smell smoke, god forbid, and you're in your room, wet a towel and take it with you, to cover your nostrils, face, mouth, stay close to the floor, smoke rises. Duh.
No, the lady is *not* for burning! :-D Stay safe!
