"Are these plays comedies?" ... "Is life?"

Last friday I went to London for a field trip with the school but we took a detour and got tickets first to Ivanvo (first written by Checkhov and this time adapted by Tom Stoppard of Shakespeare in Love fame)  staring Kenneth Branagh!!!!!! IT WAS PERHAPS THE SINGLE GREATEST THEATRICAL WORK I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!!!!!  so good.. everyone was so good... Kenneth Branagh was so so SOOOOO good!!!!!
And I have a new appreciation of Checkhov... i love the classics what can I say, I enjoy modern theatre as well but there is something about making the old plays still relevant! I LOVE IT!
The title of this blog is in fact from a discussion in the program.. Checkhov's plays like Cherry Orchard and the Seagull are not happy go lucky plays yet he did intend them as comedies... when asked "Are they true comedies.. he answered is life!!!!!!! this is why i love dark comedies.. when not everything turns out peachy.. when things are funny yet a bit off.  First of all i think comic acting is much harder then dramatic acting and secondly I think you can get just as strong a point across even though it takes a bit more work.. who wouldn't be excited by that.
Also his characters.. they are so NOT one layer characters.. he doesn't take the easy road of just making someone crazy.. he gives them reasons upon reasons.. layers upon layers!
There is a hero of course but no we don't love him.. he has faults ..we all have faults.. but we do feel sympathy for him... we know that although what he is doing may not be correct it is at least justified within himself.. how exciting!
And all the characters are that complex.. even the random guy complaining about card games has a rhyme and reason to it.. and the symbols are not just thrown randomly about the script but ingrained and tightly woven so it all works together.  This is playwrighting, acting, and directing at it's finest.. this is taking something old and breathing new but still true to the original life into it!
I am undone.. i am amazed.. i am inspired
